Thermal Drones for Bridges and Hard Infrastructure
Concrete that has delaminated no longer conducts heat the way sound concrete does. After a sunny day, a bridge deck sheds heat unevenly, and a thermal pass shows the unsound areas as a pattern — the same information a chain-drag survey produces, without closing a lane. The mission puts unusual demands on the aircraft. Much of the work happens from below or beside a span, where GPS is unreliable, prop wash is tight against a surface, and the operator needs a stable close-range image. A payload that is compact and a flight controller that holds position without satellites matter as much as sensor resolution, and a radiometric record is what lets an engineer defend the finding in a report.

What this mission demands
Stable flight without satellites
Under a deck, GPS drops out. Vision and obstacle sensing that hold position close to a surface matter more here than in open-air missions.
Close-range image detail
Delamination reads as a pattern at a metre or two of standoff, so a sharp close-range thermal image with no motion blur is the whole job.
Radiometric records
An engineering report needs a recorded temperature and a timestamp per image, not a screenshot from a live feed.
Repeatable comparison
Infrastructure inspections are cyclical. The same route flown the same way each cycle is what shows whether a defect has grown.

Questions buyers ask
Yes, when the deck is heated and cooling. Delaminated concrete loses its thermal bond, so the area cools differently from sound concrete and shows as a pattern in the thermal image. It is a screening method; findings are still verified by sounding or coring.
